The Starry Nights of Florida

There is much talk of our disappearing night sky, and fortunately in 2001 the National Park Service took the formal step of recognizing the night sky as a natural resource. There are still places in the Eastern US where you can find a bit of darkness, and the Everglades is one such place. One image was made on a pure night sky, the other accompanied by the glow of the moon, both in the Florida Everglades.

These are all iPhone photographs made along the backroads of Alabama and Georgia during the spring of 2013. Some are old homes that will soon pass back to the earth, others currently occupied, tenants unknown. All were processed with Snapseed, some further processed using Instagram.

Spring Run, Tallulah Gorge

This was an iPhone project related to the release of water in the Tallulah Gorge from the dam built in 1921. Each spring and fall there is a release of water and the kayakers take to it. It’s quite the spectacle. While I made a few images of the kayakers, my focus was to catch the gorge on the second morning so that I could see the river as it might have been on a spring day in the early 1900′s.

Each spring there is one weekend where water is released from the dam. At 8am sirens sound, the flood gages open and 500-700cfs is released. Once the waters calm a bit, boaters are allowed to ride the river.

The river is released once in the spring and once in the fall. It was also released for the movie Deliverance.

These three girls were were dancing and singing a Ladakhi song at the Tsemo Gompa (monastery) in the Ladakhi capital town of Leh. From the archives, the images were made on September 17, 2009.

The first photograph was made in Yulee, Florida sometime around 1995 when the truck had approximately 36,000 miles on it. The second photograph was made on Monte Sano Mountain in Huntsville, Alabama when the truck had around 360,000 miles, just last week. The truck and me have indeed been on many journeys. We’ve traveled from Florida to California and back around 8 times, been to British Columbia in Canada, the Baja Peninsula in Mexico and up to Maine. There’s many memories contained therein, and hopefully many more to come. I’ve had the truck now for 21 years and we’re currently on a new journey, on the way to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area to serve as a Park Ranger.
