While Katmai is all about the bears, one of the best wildlife encounters I experienced was with a lynx. My roommate and I went for an evening paddle on a lake. We heard a cry from an animal that unlike anything I’d heard before. We decided to paddle along the shore to discover what was making the sound. Much to our surprise we spotted a lynx sitting along the shoreline. The rest of the encounter was magical. The lynx walked the shore watching us and seemed to say, “Look at you all gliding across the water.” We replied to the lynx, “Look at you softly gliding through the forest.” It was as magical a wildlife encounter as I’ve ever experienced.
