Lake of the Clouds… Reading Thoreau

I’m on the road this week, so this will simply be a postcard from the road. I had the opportunity to catch the fall at Lake of the Clouds in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. It lies in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Lake of the Clouds sits in the midst of woodlands not far from the shores of Lake Superior. It’s a jewel of a wilderness area and I like to think this was simply my first trip there.

While I was making my first photographs upon arrival, I noticed a young woman sitting and reading a book. I saw myself in that scene 20 years before. I asked if she was reading a prayer book, and she replied, “I’m reading Thoreau.”

    • Yes! She seemed apologetic at first, and basically stated that she was reading just the opposite of a prayer book. I let her know that it was a lot closer to a prayer book than she imagined.
