This might be the first winter solstice that I’ve truly anticipated. Living in the Alaskan interior, we truly look forward to longer days, when the mid-day sun is capable of warming the day.

For us the solstice will occur on Saturday at 7:19pm AKST. At that instant the North Pole will be tilted the farthest from the sun on the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth’s axis. At the moment the sun will be directly over the Tropic of Capricorn. Happy Solstice everyone!
