The Everglades… The White and Brown Pelicans

A wonderful bird is the Pelican.
His beak can hold more than his belly can.
He can hold in his beak
Enough food for a week!
But I’ll be darned if I know how the hellican?

– Dixon Lanier Merritt

Like the alligator, the brown pelican is ubiquitous in the Everglades. So ubiquitous that I took him for granted and rarely turned my camera towards him. The white pelican is not seen as often, but when they are seen, it’s in sizable numbers. This season I decided to photograph a few pelicans. These were all made from a moving canoe at some point or another, so I’m pretty happy with how they turned out.

  2. I only see white pelicans here so I’m glad you included the brown pelican. They look quite different! I’ve a fondness for pelicans as well. Beautiful shots, as always.

  3. Ah, my friends the pelican. Some creatures just connect with me more than others. For me it is pelicans and squirrels. 😀 Love the white ones. I have never seen those here.

  4. Loving these. We see pelicans all the time in Newport and can’t get enough of them. Love your shot of morning flight of the brown pelican, getting ready to skim the water….it’s so amazing how close they come to the water (especially here in the ocean when the waves are up). I guess only the skilled survive!
